What is the Procedure When I Change my Name?
I have been staying in Japan for a long time with a permanent visa. Recently I changed my name and renewed my passport. Please advise me what procedure I should take next. In addition, I’m planning to go back home for a short time.

Should you change your name, you are required under the foreign registration law to register it at your local office within 14 days of the change. At the same time you have to apply for a new foreign registration card.

Since your passport number and the date of issue have also been changed, you need to register these changes. Please take both your old and new passports with you for this procedure.

After obtaining a new foreign registration card, please go to the nearest Immigration office with your two passports and apply to transfer your visa status and re-entry permission to your new passport. That is, the items in the old passport will be transferred to your new passport.

If you will leave Japan under the regulation of re-entry permission soon after the transferring arrangement, it is recommendable for you to bring both your old and new passports just in case.
