How can we Obtain Residency Status for our Newly Born Child?

Question
I am a journalist and I have residency status as a journalist, and my wife is a dependent. Recently we had a baby born in Japan. Please advise us how to apply for a visa for our child. We are planning to continue to live in Japan in the future, too.

Answer
Your child’s residency status will be that of a dependent. Please go to the nearest Immigration office to apply for residency status within 30 days after the birth. The following documents are required for the application: the child’s passport, the certificate of acceptance of the birth notification, as well as both passports and foreign registration cards of the parents.

Even if you have not yet obtained a passport for your child, please start with this procedure first, and then a certificate for residency status will be issued from the Immigration office.

I do not know how much time has passed since your child was born, but if 30 days has passed due to some reasons including the obtaining of a passport, you will have to explain the relevant reasons for the delay and apply for residency status. There is a possibility that it will be accepted as a special case.

Furthermore, please apply for a foreign registration card at your local ward office within 60 days of the birth of the child. If you leave Japan within 60 days of the birth of the child, it will not be necessary for you to apply for residency status or for foreign registration. Of course, this does not apply to you in this case.
