After Marrying a Japanese Person, do I Need to Change my Residence Status?
I am an American working in a foreign-owned stock company. At present I have a “Specialist in Humanities/International Services” visa. In the near future I’m going to marry a Japanese man. After marrying him, do I need to change my residency status?

In your case, if you continue working in your present company, you don’t have to change the status. However it is possible for you to change your visa from “Specialist in Humanities/International Services” to “Japanese Spouse.” In this case, please refer to the following points:

In the future, if you are planning to apply for permanent residency, you have to pay attention to when you can apply.

As for the visa of “Specialist in Humanities/International Services,” a ten–year period of residence in Japan is required, but in the case of a “Japanese Spouse” only three years residence in Japan is required. It is advisable that you examine which visa will enable you to apply for permanent residency earlier according to your period of residence in Japan

If you are thinking about changing jobs or making a living by taking on several jobs in the future, it is recommended that you apply for a “Japanese Spouse” visa, which doesn’t restrict your activities in Japan, instead of a “Specialist in Humanities/International Services” visa.
