What if a single mother bears a child to a Japanese?
I am an English woman. At present, I am pregnant with the child of a Japanese man. Due to certain reasons, I cannot marry him at the moment, but I want to give birth to the baby in Japan and bring it up here. He has assured me of his economic support. I have a short-stay visa. What procedure should I follow?

Please ask the Japanese man to officially acknowledge that he is the father of the baby. Should he do this, the baby will be granted Japanese nationality. Since you are going to bring up the baby with the Japanese man, there is a possibility that your visa can be changed from a "short-stay" to a "residency" visa.

In order for your baby to be acknowledged, the father has to submit a certificate of acknowledgement to the local ward office where you live before the baby is born. You should prepare the following documents: the father's family register, your agreement, and some kind of evidence that you are pregnant. When you submit a childbirth certificate, you are required to inform the local ward office that you have already submitted the certificate of acknowledgement. As the child can have a Japanese nationality, a family register of the child is executed newly.

Regarding the procedure to change your visa, you are required to submit a number of documents including one that certifies the relationship between you and the baby, a document stating the conditions in which the child will be raised, a document stating your guardian's occupation and income, and also a document identifying your guarantor. In your case, since the father is taking care of you economically, it is better for him to be a guardian and guarantor. In fact, you are not a guardian of the child, but since it is you that will bring up the child, you will have permission to change your visa status to a "residency" visa.
