First of all, you have to ensure that he is qualified
for marriage on the basis of the laws of the state
where he is from, as in America, conditions for marriage
differ by state. In Japan, marriage to an American
is legally approved when an American registers it
at his local government office.
1) He is required to go to the American Consulate
General in person in Osaka and ask them to issue a
certificate stating he is, in fact, single. He has
to bring a copy of the certificate and his passport.
He will have to sign in front of the staff of the
Consulate General. Then he can obtain the certificate
that will legally allow him to marry.
2) Next, since you are a Japanese, you will need
to hand in the marriage notification document that
you filled in to your local government office, together
with a copy of your family register, your husband’s
passport, and the above mentioned certificate. The
notification of your marriage is required to be signed
by the two people who approved your marriage. Furthermore,
as you may be asked to bring other documents for the
reason of remarriage, etc., it is recommended that
you go to the government office beforehand and enquire.
When you hand in any documents written in a foreign
language, they will need to be translated into Japanese
beforehand.
3) Probably the status of his visa will be that of
Working Visa or Specialist in Humanities/International
services, so, he has to go to the nearest Immigration
office to change the status of his certificate of
eligibility. If everything is accepted, his visa status
will change to Spouse of Japanese National.
