What if a baby was born in Japan?
I'm a Nepalese. I invited my wife from Nepal. A week ago a baby was born to us. Please advise us about the procedure for obtaining a visa for the baby (where and how to do it). At present, I am working in an Indian restaurant in Yokohama as a chief cook.

When either of the couple is a Japanese, the baby is recognized as Japanese, but since your baby has Nepalese nationality, it will be necessary for you to obtain a visa for the child.

1). You should register your baby's birth at your local government office within 14 days of its birth.

2). You should also have the birth registered at the Nepalese embassy in Tokyo where you may ask for a passport to be issued for the baby.

3). Within 30 days after a baby is born in Japan, you need to apply for residency status at your nearest Immigration office. However, if you are leaving Japan within 60 days after the baby's birth, this will not be necessary. The following documents are required for this application: Application form for residence eligibility certificate, a certificate verifying your baby's birth and passports of parents and baby. The status and the duration of the baby's visa depends on that of the parents. Since you have a Technical skill visa (duration of stay is one or three years), your baby will likely receive a Dependent visa, the duration of which will be one year if yours is one year.

4). You should follow the necessary procedures for obtaining foreign registration at your local government office within 60 days of the baby's birth. Documents required include an application form for foreign registration, passport, and a certificate that your baby was born.
