How to get a verification document for divorce from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs?
I am Chinese and was married to a Japanese, but we divorced last year. After that I obtained a permanent visa. As I will marry a different Japanese man, I asked at the consulate of the Chinese embassy about my divorce certificate. They said I should obtain a copy of my previous husband’s family register and bring it to the Ministry of Foreign affairs for a verification certificate. When I take this document to the embassy, they will issue a divorce certificate. So please tell me the procedure for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

There are four different procedures for obtaining verification from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in this situation.

1. When Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ verification of Japanese official documents is necessary: Applicant - official organization - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

2. When the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ onfirmation on official stamps or apostille is necessary for the translation of official documents: Applicant - official organization - Notary office - the legal affairs bureau - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

3. When Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ verification is necessary for private documents: Applicant - Notary office - the legal affairs bureau - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

4. When Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ verification is necessary for the document issued by a registration officer (such as copy of
family registration): Applicant - the legal affairs bureau - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Your case is No. 1. No verification fee is required.
