Procedure for Foreign Students to Enter a University in Japan?
I am Japanese. However, a son of my Korean friend wishes to enter a university here in Japan. Please tell me about the procedure for entering a university and obtaining a visa.

1. The first involves gaining direct entry by passing the selection process of the university of your choice in a foreign country. You may take the examination in your own country or in Japan.

2. The second method involves coming to Japan to enter a Japanese language school to master Japanese language and prepare for passing the selection process of the university of your choice. The selection method varies by university, so it is advisable to obtain the entrance guide and examine its contents. In general, the following examinations are carried out:

A. Examination for entering a university: This examination started in 2002 and is held twice a year in 15 cities in Japan, as well as in Seoul and Pusan in Korea.

B. Japanese Language Proficiency Test: This examination is carried out by the Japan Foundation (overseas) and the Association of International Education, Japan (in Japan) to assess the students’Japanese language ability.

First you will need to find a university and study the entrance requirements. Upon gaining an understanding of them, you need to pass the selection process of the university. In the case of 1, the university will apply for the certificate of qualification for the stay, and in the case of 2, you are required to directly apply for the extension or alteration of your visa documents at your nearest immigration office.
