How Can Foreign Students In Japan Stay To Find A Job After Graduation?
I am a Chinese student and scheduled to graduate in March, 2005. My visa will also expire in the same month. I
am studying construction at university and therefore would like to find a job in which I can use the knowledge I have gained in Japan for at least a few years. Since I have not found a job, I cannot change my visa status. One option is for me to return temporarily to China before my visa expires and ask my university professors or acquaintances to find a job for me. But it doesn’t seem easy to find a job this way as I am not here. Do you have any good ideas?

I suggest that you apply to change your visa status from “student visa” to “Temporary Visitor’s visa,” explaining that you are finding a job before your visa expires. To do this, you are required to obtain a recommendation letter from your university to prove that you are looking for a job.

If your visa change is approved, you will be able to stay for an extra 90 days. If you can find a job during this period, you must apply to change your visa status from “Temporary Visitor’s Visa” to “Work Visa.” If you fail to find a job during this time, you can extend your visa only one more time. You can stay in Japan for a total of 180 days with a “Temporary Visitor’s visa.”

If you are a scholarship student, you will not be able to receive the scholarship money after graduating from your university. If you apply to do certain activities after your visa has expired, you will be granted exceptional permission even though your status is “Temporary Visitor.” This will allow you to look for a job
while you are working at a part-time job.
