What are the key points of the Immigration Law revision this time?
I am in charge of the foreign registration section at a city office in Shizuoka prefecture, where many foreigners are residing. I heard that the immigration law has been changed again since June 2. Please tell me about these changes.

The date of implementation varies according to the revised sections. Furthermore, the implementation dates for some of them have not yet been determined. However, the revisions will most likely all be in effect from the end of May next year.

Increased penalties for illegal overstayers: The size of the fine for illegal overstayers has been raised from 300,000 yen to 3,000,000yen. Employers who hire illegal foreign overstayers face an increase in fines from 2,000,000 yen to 3,000,000yen. Furthermore, the refusal of re-entry period for those who have been deported has increased to 10 years.

New Deportation Regulations: Procedures have become easier for illegal overstayers who voluntarily appear at the Immigration Office and request to leave Japan. They will be allowed to enter Japan again after one year if they wish to return.

New Deportation Regulations: Foreigners who have landed illegal in Japan, or neglected to follow the correct visa regulations without acceptable reasons, will have their visas cancelled and may be forcefully deported.

Revision of Refugee Regulations: A major revision has been made to refugee regulations that includes abolishing the 60 day rule.
