| What
happens if I forget to renew my 02.11.15 Visa? |
 |
| I came to Japan from Bangladesh
and am studying medicine at a national university in
Nagano prefecture. I came to Japan on March 18th, 1999,
and at the time was on a family stay visa. On January
25th, 2001, I changed my status to that of a foreign
student and received a two-year student visa. As I had
first entered the country in March, the entire time
I thought that it would be ok if I renewed in March.
When I take a close look at my passport, however, it
turns out that my visa is over by as much as two weeks.
Due to my carelessness, I've inadvertently overstayed.
What's the best thing for me to do now? |

Up until June of 2002, there was a special "pardoning"
method to help out people like yourself who had not
renewed their period of residence due to carelessness
or forgetfulness. However, as of July 1st, 2002, that
practice appears to have been abolished nationwide.
Therefore, since you did not apply for the renewal within
the period of residence, you are considered an illegal
holdover and eligible for compulsory expulsion procedures.
In the worst-case scenario, you might be deported. If
you wish to continue your medical studies as a foreign
student in Japan, obtaining special residence permission
during the compulsory expulsion procedure period is
the only method. The Residence Investigation Section
of the Bureau of Immigration does not carry out there
procedures, but rather the Violation Investigation Section,
so instead of being able to take care of the matter
in Nagano, you'll have to go to the Tokyo Regional Immigration
Bureau.
Even though the special "pardoning" method has been
done away with, there are exceptions. In the event of
natural disaster, sickness, or other unforeseeable event,
if you have proper proof, even if by chance you cannot
apply for renewal by the deadline, there is the possibility
that it would be accepted. Therefore, it is necessary
that you never forget that renewal application and that
care to make sure this never happens in the future.
