Residential Visa Renewal What to do When You Can’t Gain Permission for a Long Stay

Question
At present I’m married to a Japanese man and living in Japan under a “dependent visa.” Since I got married five years ago I have been extending my visa every year and have never obtained permission to stay for three years. What should I do?

Answer
It’s not possible to give you a clear answer as it really depends on the individual’s situation. However, while the Immigration Bureau was examining your case, it seems they might have judged that you are eligible for a short term visa, but not a long term one.

It might be that the Immigration Bureau have some reason for not granting you a long-term visa. Their reasons could be that you’ve registered an address as an apartment which is deemed too small for a couple, or that you live separately and aren’t considered by others to be a married couple.

In addition to those possibilities, long-term permission is hardly ever granted when a couple live overseas for most of the year and also for those who have a “skilled labor visa,” who are likely to often change their job.
