What are the Crucial Points for Extending My Status of Residence?
![]()
I’m currently living in Japan under a “Working Visa.” Recently, I passed the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, and my Japanese wife is due to give birth in eight months. Please advise me on how to extend my resident status.

We recommend the following points, not only to extend your status of residency, but for any application made to the Immigration office.
・Any information that you believe will support your case, and that you want to share with the Immigration office, should be prepared well in advance, and presented as part of your application.
・Contrarily, if there is disadvantageous information regarding your case, it is recommended that you prepare to sufficiently explain the circumstances thereof when applying.
The Immigration office considers each case based on the information supplied by the applicant. So, if you do not include favorable information, such as your wife’s pregnancy and your success in passing the JLPT, then the Immigration office will proceed in that information’s absence - which ultimately weakens your application.
Contrarily, if you omit disadvantageous information that Immigration discovers while considering your application, then you will have a greater hurdle to overcome. This is why it is important to disclose such information voluntarily, so that Immigration can consider your application in its entirety.
