In the Case of Failure to Renew Your Visa on Time

Question
I’m staying in Japan under a “Skilled Labor” visa. I forgot all about the renewal and yesterday it expired. I was too busy working and the nearest Immigration office is quite far from my home. Now, I am trying to get it done as quickly as possible - so please advise me on what I now have to do.

Answer
As a result, you will now be treated as an illegal alien who has overstayed your visa’s permitted duration. If you have an undeniable reason for not renewing it in time, with satisfactory proof, then Immigration may allow you to reapply for it. However, understand that your case will now be very difficult.

If a visa’s expiration date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or National holiday, you are required to apply one day before. If you have forgotten to renew your visa and it has expired, you must immediately contact the Immigration office and explain your situation, and then ask them for instructions.

For your information, you can apply to extend your duration of stay as early as three months before the expiration date. Don’t wait until the last minute!.
