How to Obtain a Dependent Visa (No.3 - Dealing with Submitting Unexpected Additional Documents)
![]()
I’m staying in Japan under a “Skilled Labor” visa. I’m hoping to bring my wife over from my home country so that we can live together in Japan. The other day, when I handed in the completed spousal visa application form, I was asked for an additional document that I didn’t have, but that I now must get from my employer. What is the next procedure?

When the Immigration office requires an applicant to submit additional documentation, they will usually send the applicant a letter entitled “Notice of data submission.” If, after receiving it, the applicant is unable to furnish any of the newly requested documents, then s/he must explain in writing the reason(s) why.
If you can not submit a particular document because it is too difficult to obtain, then your visa application will be judged solely on the submitted documents, unless you have other, special reasons.
Furthermore, those documents required in the “Notice of data submission” are, from the Immigration office’s point of view, the remaining documents necessary for them to grant you your visa. Therefore, it would be unfavorable for your application not to submit them.
If you are really unable to submit all the required documents needed to complete your visa application, it is still in your best interest to sincerely explain in writing, the reason(s) why.
