What is the Immigration Procedure When Changing a Job?
![]()
Our company is mainly engaged in running restaurants, and recently we decided to hire a foreign cook who is already working in Japan. He will cook foreign cuisine as he has before. Presently, he possesses “Skilled Labor” visa status that will last for another year and a half. Please advise us about any procedures we must follow down at the Immigration Office.

Since the person you are going to employ already has “Skilled Labor” visa status, there is nothing for you to do, as long as the job you will give him matches his present visa terms.
However, if there is a difference, then you must apply for a Certificate of Work Eligibility, in order to adjust his employment terms.
As a safeguard, you can apply for the certificate which will ensure that his status matches the job description. Then, once this certificate is obtained, it will then be easier for your company to apply for permission to extend his term of residence when the time comes.
