"Miracle" Zoo in the Far North of Japan
Asahiyama Zoo

This zoo was to be closed as visitors numbers had decreased, but staff remodeled the animal display methods so that the animals’ natural habitats could be seen more dynamically. Now, Asahiyama Zoo has become the most spotlighted zoo in Japan. This success story has great influenced other zoos and theme parks around the country. Many tourists from abroad visit the zoo.

ˆThe popular event in Asahiyama Zoo, “King penguins walking.” This event takes place to give these beautiful
penguins more exercise, and also to make good use of their habitat, where they move in groups when they
look for food. This event only takes place in winter on snowy days.
