What shall I do?
One night, they had a really big fight. I could hear the sound of something being broken, sounds of something crashing into the wall, sounds of the woman being beaten, a loud verbal attack by the man and the cry of the resisting woman. About 5 minutes later, the man was more excited, shouting "I'll kill you" and the sounds of her being beaten hard struck my ears. The woman cried "Stop it!" Her screaming was enough to prove that she would be killed soon. I was horrified. I wondered if I should call the police. As I am working illegally as a part-time hostess, I knew that if I reported it to the police I had a risk that Immigration would force me to leave Japan. Also I was afraid that the man would do something to me as his revenge. I had totally lost myself. Sometime later, the next room suddenly became quiet. I was sure on the spot that she had been murdered. That night I could not sleep at all for fear. Next morning, I decided to go to my school anyway and opened the door of my room. Just then, the door of the next room opened. I stood still with surprise. The couple came out arm-in-arm. As they saw me, the woman said with a smile "Good morning" and the man bowed to me as if nothing had happened. I saw them off, stunned. |
I
am a foreign student from Malaysia and living in a cheap
apartment in Tokyo. A couple in their 30's live in an end
room that is next to my room and I sometimes hear their
voices when they are fighting.
