Popular Entertainment in Japan includes Pachinko, Gehsen, Karaoke ...

One of the many kinds of entertainment Japanese like is Pachinko. Pachinko parlors can be easily spotted all over Japan and at the very least you will find one around any train station. Pachinko is a Japanese-style slot machine that is loved by men and women of all ages. It is very easy to play. You buy the Pachinko balls with an appropriate amount of money, say one or two thousand yen, and put them into the Pachinko machine. You then hit a ball using a handle attached to the machine, aiming at the center of "slot start hall."

When a ball falls into the hole in the center, the display begins to show three different spinning images at a time. When three images match, many balls start coming out. There are many kinds of pachinko machines. Pachinko players can exchange the balls they win for various products at the pachinko parlor. The products can be exchanged for cash at a small booth that is always near the parlor. Pachinko is actually a kind of gambling, but since the parlors don't directly exchange the balls for money, legally it is not recognized as a gambling site.

Recently, the number of "Gehsen," which is an abbreviation for "Game Center," has been increasing, especially in big cities where they are popular among the younger generation. You can play with the large-scaled games using computers including those providing virtual experiences. Many new games have been introduced. On the other hand, games such as a crane game in which players pick up objects from a pile of goods contained in a transparent box, are still popular.

Internet café where you can also enjoy reading comics
There are also more Internet café. Japanese Internet café have a unique characteristic in that you can not only use a computer, but you can also read comics as they usually have a comic corner filled with a variety of comic books. Many Internet café have evolved from comic café. In addition to that, there are now more and more café equipped with reclining seats for you to enjoy watching DVDs and play TV games.

There are also many DVD/video rental shops. They offer a variety of videos and DVDs ranging from foreign movies to famous Japanese movies and animation. Those who are learning the Japanese language will be able to find some good learning material in these shops. The easiest form of entertainment will be watching TV, but there are only a limited number of programs in English including some news. Now that broadband services are becoming more widespread, more and more non-Japanese are increasingly listening to news from their own countries over the Internet.

Karaoke is ever popular. Most bars are equipped with karaoke facilities, but parlors specializing in karaoke can be seen all over Japan, the birthplace of karaoke. Karaoke parlors contain a variety of rooms called "Boxes" that people can rent with friends or family. In these boxes, you can relax and have fun with familiar people. Meals and drinks are also available, as well as English songs.
